Matthew Nickless, Tāmaki Paenga Hira | Auckland War Memorial Museum

Matthew Nickless (Tangata Tiriti) is a historian and museum professional based at Tāmaki Paenga Hira | Auckland War Memorial Museum. He works with the Online Cenotaph team where he provides research support and writes on New Zealand military history. He holds a Master of Arts in History from Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland, where he wrote his thesis titled “Through the Red Lens: Constructed Perceptions of Māori as a Violent Race, 1857–1873”. In it he investigated how race was invoked to stoke fear and justify the invasion of Waikato.
