Abstract

The recent botanical examination and dating of a tag from a South Island rain cape in the Otago Museum collection has lead to an examination of the circumstances surrounding its discovery, and an analysis of the significance accorded it by early researchers.

Moira White, Otago Museum

Moira White is Research and Interpretation Coordinator, Humanities at the Otago Museum, Dunedin, New Zealand. Her research interests include Pacific textiles and Melanesian material culture. She is a former council member of the New Zealand Archaeological Association and of the Costume and Textiles Association of New Zealand.

Janice Lord, Department of Botany, University of Otago

Janice Lord is a botanist and plant ecologist by training, having completed a PhD at the University of Canterbury in her home town of Christchurch, followed by four years as a post-doctoral fellow at Macquarie University, NSW, exploring the flora and landscapes of south-eastern and central Australia. She joined the Botany Department at the University of Otago in 1996, where she teaches and conducts research in plant ecology and evolution. Understanding the botany of southern New Zealand is a particular passion, especially with regard to how ancient and recent history has shaped plants and landscapes.
